If your interest is in Microsoft's database scene, you should consider new generation certifications promoted by Microsoft in the database category:

the Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist: SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2005 as well as the IT Professional: Database Developer, IT Professional: Database Administrator and IT Professional: Business Intelligence Developer.

Open-source database provider MySQL offers the Associate, Developer, DBA and Cluster certifications to validate skills for managing and implementing MySQL databases. MySQL certification has been integrated into the Oracle Certification Program as part of Oracle’s acquisition of Sun Microsystems.

There are also database - DB2 - certification offerings from IBM in the market. However, Oracle is not just the market leader in database sales; Oracle promotes and sponsors the world’s most popular database certifications - Oracle Database Administrator Oracle Certified Professional (OCP), Oracle Certified Associate (OCA) and Oracle Certified Master (OCM).

Don't worship Oracle; don't worship certification. Certification is a tool. Practical certification is what matters. Although supply of IT skills is unevenly spread, overall IT skills demand still outstrips supply. Your ability to improve productivity enhances your credibility - this can only to open doors for you. Your value not your qualification is your power.
