Cisco CCNA - just what is the BIG deal?

What is the point in Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)? Why does this certification matter? Just what is the big deal?  What is driving the interest? Why is there so much demand? It is the world's most popular entry level networking certification. Registration is on at present for Limited Time Offer Class

The certification provides a solid foundation and inside information for the knowledge of networking and internetworking involving medium sized route and switch networks, including connecting to remote sites in a WAN.

Though the certification stands out because of the Cisco name and backing, its importance is underlined by the fact that this popular exam tests candidates and validates important fundamental knowledge and skills required to select, connect, configure, and troubleshoot various networking devices for use in these networks.

- Objectives

Specifically exam objectives expect candidates to be able to: Describe how a network works; Configure, verify and troubleshoot a switch with VLANs and interswitch; Implement an IP addressing scheme and IP Services to meet network requirements in a medium-size Enterprise branch office network.; Use Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP); Configure, verify, and troubleshoot basic router operation and routing on Cisco devices; Explain and select the appropriate administrative tasks required for a WLAN; Identify network security threats and describe general methods to mitigate those threats; Implement, verify, and troubleshoot NAT and ACLs in a medium-size Enterprise branch office network; Implement and verify WAN links;

Within these domains, the exam will ask detailed and complex questions. These questions include multiple choice, drag and drop, and simulation style questions in varying numbers. One of the reasons why it is so high on credibility is its requirement that candidates must perform simulations during the exam. It is beyond the paper, to pass the exam you must be able to perform important hands-on tasks. The passing score is 849 out of 1000. High isn’t it? Yes, that’s what the exam demands.

- Career

Interested in network management? Then CCNA could be at the beginning of your career. It can be challenging but it equips you with networking skills that matter because you develop the capability to manage and optimize network systems. In view of the support it receives fas well as Cisco’s amazing dominance of the internetworking world, it is recognized globally as one of the top foundation credentials in the field of networking. It is a top gun certification that matters.

Since it was first introduced the exam has gone through quite a few changes from 407, 507, 607, 801. Presently, it can be taken in one, single exam - Composite 640-802 OR can be taken as a two part exam - 640-822 ICND1 Interconnecting Cisco Networking Devices Part 1 and 640-816 ICND2 Interconnecting Cisco Networking Devices Part 2. Most people opt for the seemingly faster but tougher 640-802. 640-802 is the most popular route to earning this certification. The 640-802 also costs less as you only pay for one exam. Please note however that in these matters popularity is not all that counts. It always depends on what works for you

These exams require a higher percentage to pass, and have more simulation-type questions than other certifications. This is no exception. It even has a reputation for being tougher than other entry-level certifications. But tough for the sake of tough? NO WAY!! These exams are tough love credentials. They are for IT professionals who love the associated pain and hard-worn recognition. Difficult but Respected. They are NOT paper certifications, they're kept up-to-date and address industry needs.

- Outlook and Tips

Toughness means candidates must have the ability to learn - which is required in this industry - and keep learning. And because of the serious learning requirement, new IT professionals with this credential tend to have a better understanding of the technology. Investing in such a key certification is a sign of initiative. IT IS NOT JUST ABOUT THE CERTIFICATE. If you work with computers, you'll have to work with a network. Understanding the basics of a network is invaluable for a solid grounding in the fundamentals.

Though no preliminary knowledge or experience is expected for the certification, a background in networking certainly helps. There are no prerequisites for this test. Indeed Don Fields. Cisco Director of certification states, “No preliminary knowledge or experience is expected for the certification; however, candidates should be prepared with hands-on networking skills and networking know-how according to the exam requirements”.

After attaining the certification, the exam is valid for three years before it must be recertified. And the sponsor itself can decide to update the certification to stay current with industry and market needs. For those with future, long term ambitions in this area and internetworking, the CCNA is useful as a starting point for higher level certifications; it is in fact a requirement for CCNP and some other high level certifications.

So are you interested in this BIG deal? Can you answer 45 to 55 questions on the fundamentals of internetworking in 90 minutes (640-802 exam option)? Interestingly several students in our training school have actually set global standards by making the perfect score of 1,000. Quality preparation is the key.

Be prepared – excellent preparation is what the certification demands of you. Effective exam groundwork must include knowledge, skills and speed.
