ICT and
Entrepreneurship -
e-skills and
Your Career
The focus of this edition
is your e-skills and entrepreneurship. Can all the initiatives – banking
sector reform, privatization, debt relief, anti-corruption - being used to
improve the economy bear fruit in the absence of information and
communication technologies (ICTs) and what will be the results if new
businesses are not being created? Creating jobs and wealth in the new
economy means e-skills and Entrepreneurship must be priorities.
We must develop and exploit
new ways of doing and creating business with electronic skills. Our foreign
reserve may be very high but will foreign reserves alone reduce poverty and
unemployment? How many new businesses are being created? Are we becoming
more productive in the new economy?
For example, where are the
jobs? The chorus is one of retrenchment, lay-offs, mass sack, rightsizing,
downsizing, etc. There are no job guarantees anymore. We must use ICT,
e-skills and entrepreneurship to remain relevant and secure our future.
e-skills and Your Career has always emphasized e-skills and ICTs; two editions
of the program focus on the combination of ICT and entrepreneurship.
So what is entrepreneurship?
Is the entrepreneur simply someone who wants to work for
him or herself? Entrepreneurship means setting up and running a business in
a profitable and sustainable manner. Entrepreneurs innovate, discover new
products, new opportunities, and startup new ventures. Doing things
differently or more creatively – for example using e-skills to develop
software programs that help business people uncover new ways of reducing
expenses. In the new economy there is constant demand for innovation and
entrepreneurship.
Let’s look at some
Benefits of Entrepreneurship
1. Entrepreneurship facilitates job creation. Most new jobs come from
startups – small businesses are in fact the engine room of the economy
providing employment of the majority of working citizens. In the knowledge
economy of constant change small businesses tend to be more practical,
flexible and adaptable.
2. Most knowledge economy opportunities are not about the size of industrial
infrastructure, your age or location. From your home you can become an
entrepreneur using e-skills to design your website you can conduct
e-business with customers from all over the planet. Ideas are more important
than your sex or background.
3. Your ideas and knowledge can be used to create new jobs and wealth. An
idea doesn’t have to remain as an idea. As an entrepreneur, your idea, your
contribution is your power to meet needs and create wealth. With e-skills
you could develop databases that schools and educational institutions need
to improve their efficiency. Turn innovative ideas into profitable business
ventures.
4. "From Nobodies To Somebodies", Yes please deliver value and earn respect
and status. Repairing and maintaining computer systems for people and
organizations helps to improve their efficiency, you are also respected and
recognized in society. As you create value and employ people and you have a
voice that people listen to.
5. Entrepreneurs promotes prosperity in society, social development and
alleviates poverty by employing people who become Computer technicians and
network engineers. With e-skills and setting up your Technical Support Company
you are contributing to the economy. For example, you invest in office
space, recruit admin and engineering staff, carry out marketing activities,
pay taxes, pay for power supply - this generates social and economic
activity and Nigerians who work for you develop their technical support and
networking skills and use such knowledge to solve problems and provide
solutions.
6. Entrepreneurs make positive contributions by resolving real and genuine
business and social concerns through the provision of services and products
that improve the quality of business and social experiences – for example
developing software and ICT products that improve transport, communication (GSM/Internet),
financial services (ATM)
7. "Control your destiny, or someone else will". When you’re an
entrepreneur, you employ others and you employ yourself. There is
flexibility in the life you choose for yourself. Being an entrepreneur is an
opportunity to be independent. Run, fly and excel with your own ideas. Setup
that Web development or become the Software consultant and Be your own boss.
You can make things happen that affect you, your community and your world.
A great attraction for many is that of financial and
decision-making independence. The power to determine your income is in your
hands. Your power to create wealth is only limited by your choices,
knowledge and mindset.
Furthermore, you not only control your path, but in
addition decisions you take matter in people’s lives and in society. Many
entrepreneurs actually change society’s interest and focus.
