Have Your Say! What's cooking on Your e-skills and Career Forum?

e-skills and Your Career is a content program focusing on developing careers, acquiring skills and building quality human capital in today’s knowledge economy.

This website, careeraware.com, is the companion website for the program - careeraware.com will contain all content broadcast on radio as well as related content and ideas.

The purpose of careeraware.com is to serve as a reference for the radio broadcast; and most importantly to meet the need of those unable to listen to the program due to reasons of location and or time. We value the interest of all individuals interested in developing their e-skills, irrespective of location. Interested? Then key in. The careeraware.com website is not limited by location or time.

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) has become a major tool for learning, work, and recreation. Information has become the currency of this era and ICT is the driver.

ICT enables the exploitation of information in the workplace, in the provision of public services and in the performance of the private sector.

The objective of e-skills and Your Career is not simply on technology but is instead focused on improving awareness of the skills, careers and most importantly the thinking required by the knowledge-based economy. It’s about having the opportunity to contribute to and benefit from the knowledge society.

Information, knowledge and opportunity epitomize the digital era. People now learn, work, interact anytime, anywhere. Large amounts of information can be shared or retrieved in seconds irrespective of location. Knowledge is key in all areas – social, educational and commercial. Physical resources are still important but today knowledge is the driver.

The Global Knowledge Economy
Distance is no longer a barrier. There are global implications – all nations are members of the global village. Technology allows easy and speedy communication across different countries and regions of the world. Live in Nigeria do business in Europe. What are the implications of the knowledge economy? To remain relevant Nigeria needs competitive advantage in the global, knowledge-based economy. Knowledge is the main source of competitive advantage today.

The oil continues to flow, but this has not improved the quality of life of the average Nigerian. Physical assets are no guarantee of prosperity and sustainable development. Oil won’t be enough to be able to compete successfully in the fast moving world economy. Nigeria is Africa’s most populous nation with a population estimate of over 130 million people. What is the potential of such a population? How can the Nigerian people realize their potential? What is the future for such people? What role should people play in developing a truly knowledge driven economy? And how will they actualize such roles?

Awareness, Human and Intellectual Capital
Profiting from this environment requires awareness and a deep understanding about ICTs and how ICTs can be used to improve our situations, to create wealth and to benefit – to realize potentials. Developing a knowledge economy requires more than the heavy consumption of mobile telephony products and services. Technology is important, but people must drive the knowledge economy. Information is a critical resource, infrastructure is essential but people are the most important resource in today's global knowledge-based economy.

It is people who will create, develop and use knowledge to drive the knowledge economy. The new economy recognizes people, empowers people and rewards them for their effort. The new economy is one of innovation and opportunity – people should be able to use their knowledge, ideas, energy and creativity to develop their careers and fulfill their potentials. It is the knowledge, skills, ideas and creative efforts of people that lead to innovation. The main source of value and competitive advantage in the knowledge society is human and intellectual capital.

Skills, Careers and Thinking >> Developing our ICT and e-business skills and Careers allow us realize our potentials, while making sense of and contributing meaningfully to the knowledge economy.
